Chamonix 1924 - 25th January to 5th February

In 1922, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) decided to organise a week of winter sports in Chamonix; to complement the Paris Olympics of 1924.

258 athletes competed in 16 events; with the first gold medal going to Charles Jewtraw of the United States.

As the event proved to be a huge success, the following year the IOC recognised them as the First Winter Olympiad.

Bobsleigh

The four-man bobsleigh was the only event; with the medals going to Switzerland, Great Britain and Belgium.

Curling

Although curling (for men) was on the medal menu at the first Winter Olympics, it didn't appear again until Nagano 1998.

Ice Hockey

Canada won all five of their matches; only conceding three goals, while scoring one hundred and ten against their opponents.

Skating

As figure skating can be done indoors it actually started as an Olympic sport at the London 1908 Summer Olympics.

Speed Skating became a part of the first Winter Olympics in France; with A. Clas Thunberg of Finland taking medals in all five speed skating events: three gold, one silver and a bronze.

Skiing

What would the Winter Olympics be without the skiing?

Thorleif Haug of Norway, excelled in the Nordic skiing; winning both cross-country races and the Nordic combined.
