Alpine skiing events were included for the first time at the 1936 Winter Olympic Games; held in the Bavarian towns of Garmisch and Partenkirchen.

Austrian and Swiss skiers boycotted the events, however, when the IOC overruled the International Ski Federation (FIS) by declaring that ski instructors could not take part in the Olympics; because they were professionals.

Sonja Henie made it three gold medals at three consecutive Winter Games, while Karl Schäfer earned his second.

Norway's Ivan Ballangrud won three out of four speed skating races, including the shortest (500m) and the longest (10,000m).

In ice hockey, Great Britain upset the Canadians; although it could be argued that ten of the British team lived in Canada.
