The Winter Olympics

In 1922, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) decided to arrange a week of winter sports to be held in Chamonix, France; during the Paris Olympic year of 1924.

Some 258 athletes from 16 countries took part and the games were considered a huge success. The following year, the IOC recognised them as the first winter Olympiad and the winter Olympics continued to play a part in the sporting calendar every four years; independent of the summer Olympics.

After Albertville, in 1992, the next winter Olympics were held only two years later; in Lillehammer. The IOC had decided that the winter and summer Olympics should run alternatively every two years.

Thus two years after the summer Olympics are the winter Olympics and two years later, the next summer Olympics.
