(for the home crowd at least) was the 'shock' victory of the US ice hockey team - dubbed
'The Miracle on Ice'.
Elsewhere, Sweden's Ingemar Stenmark won both the giant slalom and the
slalom and Hanni Wenzel repeated the feat in the women’s races; as Liechtenstein
became the smallest nation with an Olympic champion.
Pairs skater Irina Rodnina and Ulrich Wehling (in the Nordic combined)
both won gold medals for the third time; while Aleksandr Tikhonov claimed a fourth
consecutive gold in the biathlon relay.
It was three gold medals in cross-country skiing for Nikolay Zimyatov
and Eric Heiden, of the United States, cleaned up with all five, speed skating races; from
500 metres right up to 10,000 metres.

Tikhonov, became the only winter athlete to win the same event four times.
